Awards night at Short & Sweet Theatre Penang 2103. It was a great night as the theatre festival came to an end with the final performances and the awards ceremony. Over the
four night festival, guest judges from the performing arts industry came to choose the best in 10 different categories. The winners received a nice basket full of goodies including a wonderful crystal trophy and a large cash prize. The script that I submitted
“‘No’ in Spite of Itself” was chosen as best script. It was certainly an honor, but not the highlight of my evening. The highlight was seeing this girl to the right – my daughter Tesa – pulling down the award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance of HELENA in the play “Noticed.” I had the privilege of directing that play which was written by one of my students Jackie. (Which, by co-incidence, Jackie won co-best supporting actress – tied voting – for her role in “‘No’ in Spite of Itself.” Ysabel, who acted with Tesa in “Noticed” also won an award – Best Newcomer! What a great night! Here I am with my spoils!
I originally wrote the script “‘No’ in Spite of Itself” as a dramatic sketch for my drama troupe The RLT Players, and it will be a part of our new show debuting in November called “Captured in Time & Space.” I decided to send the script in to Short & Sweet and it was accepted for production. Now its an award winner. The script itself is about a man name Nat who stands on the edge of a cliff contemplating all the trouble he has in his life. His alter ego comes up from behind to discuss everything with him only to be finally forced to confront the main issue in his life – loving a girl who doesn’t love him back. Here’s the proud father.
And here all of my drama students who won awards. Forty percent of the awards went to individuals from my school.
Tesa: Best Supporting actress (co) – from her role of Helena in the play “Noticed”
Jackie: Best Supporting actress (co) – writer of play “Noticed”, actor & director of play “‘No’ in Spite of Itself.”
Myself: Best Script for play “‘No’ in Spite of Itself”; director of play “Noticed”
Ysabel: Best Newcomer for her role of Kat in the play “Noticed.”
