When Life Takes Precedence over Promotion

So The Recluse Storyteller, my second novel, released in October. “How’s it going?,” you ask. I guess that depends on what “going” means.

Have I sold as many books as I have wanted to at this time? No.

Am I disappointed? Absolutely not.

I’m constantly reminded that life as an indie author is about the marathon, not the sprint. Life happens. Work happens. All kinds of things happen in the midst of the best-intentioned indie author. And that means one thing: promotion oftentimes has to take a backseat.

And you know what? That’s okay.

Promotion-wise, October got off to a great start. I got a bunch of reviews early on (positive ones) and I purchased some targeted ads and had a good month.

Then November happened. Besides teaching full time and being a father and stuff like that, I’m directing and writing for this awesome group of young actors – The RLT Players. We have our once-a-year show next week at the Penang Performing Arts Centre. I’m so proud of this group and it is absolutely a privilege to direct and work with them. It’s going to be such a fun show.

However, in the meantime, promotion for my novel has basically stopped. I’m so busy that I come home from school and lay on the couch just to try to get my brain to re-boot itself. I’ve been doing rehearsals, drama promotion, flyer printing, program writing, network-building, sound effect creating, and a host of other stressful, nerve-wracking jobs just to get ready for next week.

I love each and every one of those jobs. But stressful, yes. After all, we need to sell enough tickets to break even. That’s quite different from selling a few books and making a little money.

So this is the real life of an indie author. My novel is not forgotten. It’s only on pause.

I’ll be back in full-force in December, pushing it for the Christmas season.

But for now, my whole life is drama. And I’m loving it.
