Dec 26 Resolution

I didn’t bother to wait for New Year’s to make a resolution. I made one starting Dec 26. (Did you ever notice how easy it is to make a resolution to eat healthier after gorging yourself on Christmas dinner?)

Anyways, eating healthier it is. Now will the resolution come to fruition?

Do I have the volition?

Resolutions are silly on some levels to think that on the flip of a calendar that we are going to change our lives for the better.

But I say if a calendar flip gets us to try to better ourselves in one way or another, why is that not a good thing? We all get into ruts whether it’s our eating habits or lack of exercise or too much computer time or … (fill in the blank __________)

We can do things that we are motivated to do. If it means enough to us, I’m convinced we can do it. I’ve seen it in my own life in many areas – not the least of which is writing. I resolved two and a half years ago to write and finish a novel. Now I’m working on #4.

It takes effort and discipline. It also takes the courage to try again or pick up where we left off when we “fall off the wagon” or “backslide”. But isn’t that what life is all about – learning from our mistakes and failures and trying again.

So I do declare that I support resolutions, but I also declare that I will never judge a person who doesn’t fulfill their resolution. I might, however, encourage them to keep trying because you never actually fail. You only stop trying.

So here I go.
