$150,000 for a TV Set . Really?

Samsung unveiled their latest and greatest – a 110″ ultra HD TV set that will cost around $150,000.

Hmmm. Where do I even begin with this one?

I’m all for the free market, but really? It’s just a TV. It will have the same crappy programs on it as my $500 32″ LCD. Anyways, do you really want a life-size Miley Cyrus in your living room? Aren’t our kids scarred enough?

I grew up with a black and white set – knobs and all – no remote – and I was mesmerized by the little white dot that stayed illuminated on the set for about a minute after it was turned off. And remember that the tubes had to warm up before a picture would appear.

When it broke for good, my parents weren’t even going to replace it, but my brother went out and bought a colored set with his hard earned money. It was something to behold and was nowhere in the ballpark of 100 grand or more. (I’m starting to sound like an old grandpa, aren’t I?)

Having nice things is one thing. Always having the latest, greatest, most expensive is something entirely different, in my opinion. When we start plopping down 150 grand on something as common and mundane as a TV, I do start questioning priorities.

If you are thinking about buying one of these monstrosities, please think again. Be happy with the 88″ that you already have. Do something worthwhile with your 150 grand. Feed the homeless with it. Donate it to a worthy charity. Give it to your church. Give a scholarship to some needy students. Replace the leaking roof of an elderly widow in your community.

I really hope Samsung sells exactly zero of these sets. But for some reason, I’m sure that won’t happen.

  1. hmm.. you do make a very good point here. Maybe consumerism does has a strong influence on us and how do we spend our money. Because of greed and the need to be praise/acknowledge, we tend to go for luxurious item such as branding, spectacular specification or size with relevance to your post.
