On Christmas Eve 1852, a runaway slave slips unnoticed through a meadow and happens upon a small, rustic cabin in the woods, occupied by a boisterous old woman named Beatrice. As a winter storm blows in and the sheriff comes inquiring, all that stands between the frightened girl and the arm of the law is a stack of biscuits and a whole lot of love.

“If Love is a Crime” is a short piece of historical fiction that offers a powerful and emotional picture of the beauty of love and the spirit of Christmas. “If Love is a Crime” is sure to stir the emotional embers of compassion and love, which permeate the most wonderful time of the year.

The stories haunt Margaret every waking moment, but they are anything but random. A fractured view Michael Cheevers’ red hat through a discreetly cracked door sends her off on adventure. A glimpse of the Johnson twins from apartment 2D transports her mind to the lonely hill on a Midwestern prairie in 1887. The regular letters from Reverend Davies bring her to the brink of exhaustion as she stares intensely into the heart of war, deep in the jungle of Vietnam.

Margaret is not insane, at least not in a clinical sense. She’s like a midnight raccoon, painfully aware of her surroundings, gleaning crumbs of information at every turn. Her eyes peer incessantly in the night, stealing glances of the neighbors through partially opened doors. But the tales she weaves were not meant to merely hold empty court to the receptive dead air of her apartment. Her stories were meant to embolden the lives of the inhabitants of that drab apartment block because her story is also their story–and everything would be different if they could only hear the prophetic words of the rambling recluse.

On Sale: December 25 – December 27, my debut novel, Beauty Rising, only $0.99 on Kindle. 4.4 stars with 84 reviews on Amazon.

Beauty Rising Mark W Sasse“My heart sank. I dumped my father’s ashes in the heart of communist Vietnam – over a thousand miles from the death of his comrades – over a thousand miles from the smile of that girl. How could I have been so stupid?”

Only the bumbling, overweight, thirtyish, stay-at-home Martin Kinney could have mistakenly flubbed his dying father’s request with such gusto. This thousand mile mistake awakens the ghosts of long-held family secrets and puts Martin on a fateful course with an unlikely romantic interest – a young, beautiful, yet troubled Vietnamese woman named My Phuong.

With its cross-cultural setting and unlikely romance, the 61,000 word novel Beauty Rising creates a powerful, unique voice in today’s literature. In a swift-moving, dialogue-driven prose which is funny, honest, tragic and unpredictable, Beauty Rising explores the depths of culture, family, and love as the Vietnam War, a generation removed, continues to hang on the periphery of society, cursing families and causing destruction.

The 1 YR Anniversary of “The Recluse Storyteller” – Hint: Going free soon!

“5 STARS … This is definitely one of my favourite books of the year!” – Myra, from Pieces of Whimsey

Early October marks the one-year anniversary of the release of my second novel, The Recluse Storyteller.

I was nervous releasing this one because of it’s unique narration style and because it’s a combination of five different stories. It can be kind of confusing – at first! I knew some readers wouldn’t like the way I told the story. Some even called it “poorly executed.” Ouch!

But that’s all right because overall it has been very well received in the realm of readers. I think it’s a story that grows on you. At first you have this strange reclusive middle-aged woman who seems completely off the rails and insane as she tells stories to herself about the neighbors she watches.

But if the reader doesn’t give up, they will be rewarded to a unique blending of the stories which ultimately brings everything back to the feet or our protagonist. The stories that she tells range from historical fiction, to a Vietnam War story, to a high-adventure thriller. Eventually, we see the storyteller herself unmasked, and her story is revealed. It’s a lot of fun in a gripping emotional kind of way.

If you haven’t read it, please check it out in either Kindle or paperback.

HINT: It’s going free on Kindle next week for a few days!

As always, thanks for your support.

24 More Hours – The Recluse Storyteller FREE on Kindle (among other thoughts)

I greatly appreciate all the comments, thanks, and downloads I’ve received over the last 24 hours. It’s exciting to get my writing into the hands of excited readers, and I can’t wait to hear the reviews and thoughts on my writing. No matter what is said, it is always constructive and helpful.

The free days also insures that my writing doesn’t fall into a black hole. I love writing, and I love sharing it with others. I hope that what I write can be a small respite from the mundane aspects of life. I hope I can make people laugh, cry, and turn pages in a maddening fashion. That’s my goal.

And I plan on writing many more stories in the future, so here’s to building a group of individuals that I can connect with as a writer. That is truly precious to me. I sincerely thank you all for your support and would love to hear your feedback about The Recluse Storyteller. Oh, and by the way, my third novel, The Reach of the Banyan Tree, is coming out July 1, 2014. So if you like the recluse, please check out the banyan.

Thanks again!

The World Getting Smaller. Day 4: Beauty Rising free on Kindle.

I’m continuously amazed at the reach of Amazon and what it means for indie writers like me. My novel, Beauty Rising, has been downloaded all over the world including the UK, India, Italy, Brazil, Spain, Japan, Germany, and Canada. And I currently sit in Malaysia. The world sure has gotten smaller.

I’ll breakdown the numbers on a future post, but I, as an indie author, have a global reach. In addition to my Kindle free promotions, I have done Goodreads giveaways where I have sent print versions into Indonesia and Vietnam. Isn’t this an amazing time to be an author. There are so many resources available to distribute one’s works worldwide. j

Two days left in my Kindle promotion which has surpassed 6000 downloads in the USA alone. Pass the word along by telling your friends. And if you want to win a free print copy of my second novel, The Recluse Storyteller which is releasing in October, like my facebook page and share one of my Kindle promotion posts with your friends.
