On the heels of sweeping five awards in the Short and Sweet Theatre festival recently for my short play “Words to Say at the End of the World,” we’re beginning to see that this play isn’t yet ready for retirement. I’ve been asked to have my two amazing actors perform it in three different venues over the next two months. It’s quickly becoming a mini-tour for a mini-play. It’s all very exciting and I’m thrilled to have Yzzy and Lexi get more opportunities to perform this poignant piece a few more times. So I’m proud to announce our mini-tour:
September 26 – Bayview Hotel, Batu Ferringhi, Penang – Fundraiser for Charity
November 1 – Gala Finals Night, Short & Sweet Theatre Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre
November 15 – Penang Performing Arts Centre Four-Year Anniversary Party
Perhaps we should add a European tour to the schedule. Any corporate sponsors out there that would like to fund up, send me an email!
But seriously, it’s been thrilling to see this play touch a lot of people, and it will be reaching a few hundred more over the next two months. And here are the stars of the show.
Backstage before dress rehearsal tonight.
I got my annual orange name tag – this year as playwright and director. And I meant to get a couple photos of dress rehearsal, but it seems I was too busy watching the performance.
Nine different plays are taking the stage this year. Quite an eclectic mix of material. The dress rehearsal was eerily subdued tonight. Not sure why. I anticipate much more energy from everyone starting tomorrow, so we shall see.
My play had its share of glitches tonight. The actors said they rehearsed so much back stage that they didn’t have the proper energy on-stage. Not good. I’m sure that will be corrected tomorrow. But they did great, overall. I’m looking forward to see what a week’s worth of performances will do to the show. We also had some technical glitches of missed or wrong cues which detracted from my play as well. But that is the reason for dress rehearsal. Get all that stuff out of the way.
Opening night on Wednesday. Should be fun.
I’m have more from on-the scene all week long!
I was quite pleased to get this email last night. My new, yet-to-be-performed short play will be performed as part of the SS Theatre Festival in Kuala Lumpur. The festival will be sometime in late September or early October.
I was especially happy that this script was selected (I chose two, but only one per playwright is accepted) because it is quite different for me. As the title suggests, it’s a satire set in the office of a new government agency called the “Industry Review Board.” This new agency calls a writer in for a meeting to see if his writing has been compatible with the changing tones of society.
I really like this play because it has passion and gives the audience quite a bit to think about.
I’ll have lots more about this play and my participation in the festival in the months to come, but I wanted to share the good news!
